What is chard?

Chard, also known as Swiss chard, is a leafy green vegetable that is part of the beet family. It is known for its large, dark green leaves and thick, fleshy stalks that come in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, and red. Chard is a rich source of vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin K, vitamin A, and vitamin C, and is often used in Mediterranean and Italian cuisine. It can be eaten cooked or raw, and can be used in a variety of dishes, such as soups, stews, and salads.

How do you cook chard?

There are several ways to cook chard, here are a few common methods:

  • Sautéing: Heat some oil in a pan over medium heat. Add garlic or onions if desired. Once the garlic or onions are translucent, add the chard and stir occasionally until it wilts, about 5 minutes.
  • Steaming: Place the chard in a steamer basket over boiling water. Cover and steam for about 5 minutes or until wilted.
  • Boiling: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the chard to the pot and cook for 2-3 minutes or until wilted. Drain the chard and serve.
  • Baking: Preheat the oven to 375 F. Toss the chard with some oil and seasonings. Spread the chard out on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes or until the leaves are crispy.
  • Grilling: Brush the chard with oil and seasonings. Grill the chard on medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side or until wilted and grill marks appear.
